What Are

The jowls refer to the area below your jaw leading into your neck and are one of the first regions of the face that begin to show signs of aging through sagging skin. This is due to the fact that the skin around the neck is thinner than most parts of the body and made of a different collagen content that is prone to wear and tear.

Drooping jowls can make the facial shape look heavy and create an imbalance in overall facial appearance. If you are beginning to notice jowls developing in the lower face, continue reading to learn more about the different treatments we offer at Essential Aesthetics.

What Are The

Causes of Jowls?

Aging is the number one cause of jowls. As we age, our skin doesn’t replenish collagen and elastin which are important in keeping the flexibility and elasticity of the skin. Skin tissue volume loss and less skin resilience create a lack of connective tissue which works with gravity to make the face and neck skin shift downward.

Other causes of jowls include genetic predisposition, exposure to sunlight, chronic stress, dehydration, chronic lack of exercise, and smoking tobacco products.

Dermal Fillers

For Jowls

Hyaluronic acid (HA) dermal fillers such as Juvederm are often people’s top choice for treating the jowls non-surgically. HA is a naturally occurring molecule that supplies our skin with moisture and nutrients, but diminishes as we age, causing sagging and wrinkles. When the skin is injected with dermal fillers, that lost HA is replenished and the skin looks more plump and hydrated.

Fillers can be injected into the cheeks to help create a lifted look in the face and reduce the appearance of jowls. It can also be injected into the nasolabial folds and marionette lines to soften deep lines and lift the corners of the mouth which help lessen the look of saggy jowls. Juvederm Voluma can be injected along the jawline and into the chin to create a contoured lower face.

Results with dermal fillers are immediate and can last anywhere from 6 months to 2 years or longer.

Radiofrequency Treatments

for Jowls

Radiofrequency (RF) therapy uses energy waves to heat the deep layers of the skin and stimulate collagen production. At Essential Aesthetics, we offer both RF skin tightening and microneedling to help diminish the appearance of the jowls. First, the RF skin tightening applicator is used to heat the skin and contract the muscles, creating a tightening effect that is immediate. Then, the RF microneedling device is used to create micro-wounds in the skin, stimulating a deeper collagen response and tightening the skin from the inside to the outside.

Patients typically need 6 to 8 treatments for optimal results but will notice a difference in their jowls after just one treatment.

Kybella treatment for Jowls at Essential Aesthetics

For Jowls

Oftentimes, the jowls can be caused by excessive fat in the lower face. Kybella is an injectable composed of deoxycholic acid which obliterates fat for good while stimulating collagen production through the body’s natural healing process. When injected into the jowls, Kybella shrinks the fatty pockets to create a tighter look in the lower face.

It can take anywhere from 2 to 3 treatments spaced out every 4 to 6 weeks to see results with Kybella.

For Jowls

CoolSculpting targets fat cells and expose them to below-freezing temperatures, causing them to die. The CoolSculpting Mini applicator is specifically designed to target small pockets of fat such as the jowls and beneath the chin. Once the cells are expelled from the body, you will notice a more contoured jawline and tighter jowls. Results can take anywhere from 4-12 weeks to become noticeable.

PDO Thread Lift

For Jowls

PDO threads are made of a complex sugar called polydioxanone (PDO), a safe suture material. They are used to treat sagging skin by repositioning the underlying tissues, giving your skin an immediate lift. The threads are eventually absorbed by the body, which results in natural collagen stimulation. PDO threads can be used for the jowls and jaw to help reduce the signs of aging in the lower face and give you a more contoured jawline.
