The perioral area of your face is the area that surrounds your mouth. As we age, fine lines and wrinkles naturally occur in these areas. Environmental factors such as excessive sun exposure and smoking can also make the lines more prominent since smokers use certain muscles around their mouths than nonsmokers do not.

Essential Aesthetics offers a variety of treatments to help reduce the appearance of these lines.

What Are Perioral Lines and Wrinkles?

There are various types of lines and wrinkles that form around the mouth. These include:

  • Nasolabial Folds: Also known as smile or laugh lines, this area begins to deepen as we grow older due to the loss of elasticity of the skin.
  • Marionette Lines: These lines begin at the corner of the lips and go down to the chin. The loss of fat as we age causes these lines to make our face look saggy and jowling along the jawline and neck.
  • Lip Wrinkles: Also known as lipstick lines or smoker’s lines, these appear on the superficial layer of the lips and can become quite deep over time.
  • Lip Corner Lines: These lines cause drooping in the corners of the lips, creating something known as “sad face”.
How To Remove Lines Around the Mouth

Dermal Fillers for Perioral Rejuvenation

Dermal fillers such as JUVEDERM, Restylane, and Sculptra can be used to treat static lines around the mouth. Depending on the area, our certified physician assistant, Ellie Zarnegar, PA, DMSc, will determine which filler will help to give you the best results.

JUVEDERM and Restylane are made of hyaluronic acid (HA) which helps to plump up and hydrate the lips and around the mouth.

Sculptra is made of poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA) which helps to boost the collagen production process in the skin. This filler works very well for the nasolabial folds and marionette lines.

Neuromodulators for Perioral Rejuvenation

Neuromodulators such as BOTOX and Dysport help to relax the muscles, reducing the appearance of dynamic lines and wrinkles. It can be injected into the depressor anguli oris (DAO) muscle which pulls the corners of the mouth when you frown. When botulinum toxin is injected into this muscle, it helps pull up the corners of the mouth. They can also be injected into the orbicularis oris muscle, or “kissing muscle” to help relax the upper lip and roll upward, making the upper lip look more voluminous. This also helps to reduce smoker lines around the lips.

Fractional Laser for Perioral Rejuvenation

Another treatment option for fine lines and wrinkles around the lips is fractional laser applications. We offer two comprehensive solutions to our patients:

Photoacoustic Fractional Laser:

The PiQo4 laser converts light into sound waves to create tiny holes deep within the dermis which is known as Laser Induced Optical Breakdown (LIOB). The photoacoustic beam creates pressure waves that initiate an enhanced inflammatory healing response resulting in increased production and collagen. This treatment is with non-thermal energy, reducing the risk of thermal complications and a manageable recovery process.

Fractional Laser:

Our fractional laser resurfacing treatment uses a non-ablative technology that delivers microbeams into the skin, stimulating the production of new collagen and elastin fibers in the deep layers of the skin.
