BOTOX® Cosmetic & Dysport®
What are BOTOX® Cosmetic & Dysport®
BOTOX® Cosmetic and Dysport® belong to a class of drugs called neuromodulators. These injections work by blocking signals from the brain that tell the muscles to contract, resulting in a temporary relaxation of the muscles. They are effective on wrinkles that are primarily caused by repeated facial expressions, also known as dynamic wrinkles, such as crow’s feet and frown lines. PA Ellie Zarnegar strategically uses neuromodulators to treat several areas of wrinkles including frown lines, bunny lines, dimpling on the chin, smoker lines around the mouth, and platysmal neckbands.

What is the Difference Between BOTOX® Cosmetic and Dysport®
Both BOTOX® Cosmetic and Dysport® are both types of botulinum toxins used to safely and effectively treat and prevent wrinkles. Dysport® units of measurement are different than BOTOX® Cosmetic and it uses more units of protein molecules to induce muscle relaxation. This does not mean that it is weaker than BOTOX® Cosmetic molecules, but the assay of measurement is different. Dysport® spreads more quickly and further than BOTOX® Cosmetic, therefore the results can be seen as early as 72 hours after treatment. Results with BOTOX® Cosmetic are seen after one week and can take up to 2 weeks for it to fully establish.
What Type of Wrinkles Do BOTOX® Cosmetic and Dysport® Treat?
Neuromodulators are used to treat dynamic wrinkles which form from repeatedly making facial expressions such as smiling, squinting, or laughing. As we age and lose elasticity, these lines become static wrinkles that show regardless of facial expression. PA Ellie treats static wrinkles with dermal fillers.
Dynamic wrinkles usually form on the upper part of the face, such as:
- Horizontal creases across the forehead
- Vertical indentation between the eyebrows (frown lines)
- Subtle wrinkles from the outer corners of the eyes (crow’s feet)
Neuromodulators temporarily freeze the muscle, allowing the wrinkles to relax.
Are you a candidate for BOTOX® Cosmetic or Dysport®?
Neuromodulators are approved by the FDA for use in adults ages 18-65 years old. BOTOX® Cosmetic and Dysport® treatments have been trusted by physicians and patients for many years because of their effectiveness in the treatment of lines, wrinkles, and many other medical conditions. Neuromodulators are typically very well-tolerated by most patients. BOTOX® Cosmetic and Dysport® injections may not be right for you if you:
- Have certain medical conditions such as heart disease or a bleeding disorder
- Are pregnant or breastfeeding
- Have a known allergy to botulinum toxin
Neuromodulators for Men
Referred to as “Bro-Tox”, BOTOX® Cosmetic and Dysport® treatments are seeing a great rise in popularity among men thanks to their subtle results. PA Ellie uses the product to reduce signs of aging that bother men the most, including frown lines or drooping brows. She understands that men have different goals than women, and works to create a customized treatment plan that addresses each patient’s concerns while preserving, and even enhancing the masculine contours. Neuromodulators can take years off without creating “feminine” looking results.
Preparing For Your Treatment
We recommend you abstain from alcohol, aspirin, and other substances that have a blood-thinning effect for at least 24 hours prior to your appointment. During your consultation, you and PA Ellie will discuss your aesthetic goals as well as what you can expect from your treatment more thoroughly.
In some cases, you may determine that adding dermal fillers to your BOTOX® Cosmetic or Dysport® treatment will enhance your results. This combination treatment is often called a “non-surgical facelift” or a “liquid facelift”.
Treatment with injectables is comfortable and typically takes about 30 minutes. PA Ellie begins by cleansing your face with a gentle cleanser to remove makeup, dirt, oil, and other contaminants. She then makes several injections, precisely targeting the muscles responsible for the wrinkles you wish to treat. She may ask you to smile, frown, or squint to help her better visualize the areas that need special attention. During each injection, you may feel a quick pinch.
You’re free to return to your usual activities immediately after treatment. However, for the remainder of the day, you should avoid touching your face without washing your hands, as this can lead to infection. You can expect some swelling, redness, tenderness, and/or bruising near your injection sites. These symptoms typically resolve on their own within a few days.
Neuromodulators do not take effect instantly. Results may take several days to develop. Your results last for about 4 months.Back to Top
