Fuller Lips: Making Sense of Lip Augmentation

Essential Aesthetics
Dermal Fillers

Lip augmentation refers to the aesthetic injectable of enhancing the appearance of the lips, typically by adding volume, reshaping, or redefining their contours. It is a popular option for individuals seeking fuller or more proportionate lips. Several methods can achieve lip augmentation, including injectable fillers, implants, and surgical procedures.

Now, let’s explore these methods further:

Injectable Fillers: This is the most common and non-surgical method for lip augmentation. Hyaluronic acid (HA) fillers, such as Juvéderm and Restylane, are commonly used. These fillers are injected into specific areas of the lips to add volume and shape. HA fillers provide temporary results that can last several months before gradually being absorbed by the body.

Fat Transfer: In this procedure, fat is extracted from another part of the body, typically through liposuction, and then injected into the lips. Fat transfer provides a natural and longer-lasting result than fillers since the body’s fat cells are used. However, it is a surgical procedure that requires anesthesia.

Lip Implants: Lip implants are solid materials, typically made of silicone, that are surgically inserted into the lips to enhance their size and shape. Lip implants offer a permanent solution, but they require a surgical procedure involving incisions and potential risks associated with any surgery.

Lip Lift: A lip lift is a surgical procedure that involves removing a small portion of skin from the upper lip to lift and enhance its shape. This procedure provides a more prominent “Cupid’s bow” and can create a more youthful appearance. Lip lifts are generally permanent but involve surgery and require a recovery period.

JUVÉDERM and RESTYLANE products are popular among our San Ramon-area patients because they’re pre-formulated with lidocaine. The addition of this popular and safe anesthetic makes injections much more comfortable. Most patients liken it to a quick pinch.

The Treatment Session

Before undergoing lip augmentation, it is critical to consult with a certified and experienced healthcare expert. You will discuss your goals, options, and potential dangers during this consultation. The treatment itself will have you in and out of the office within 30 minutes, with instant results you can enjoy for months!

The length of recovery varies on the method used. There is little downtime with fillers, and you may usually resume normal activities right away. Bruising and swelling may last up to 2 weeks for some patients.  Swelling and recovery time may be longer after surgical treatments.

Fillers produce rapid results, but they may take a few days to settle. Fat transfer and surgical techniques may take longer to provide obvious effects. Fillers are only temporary and require touch-up treatments on a regular basis to maintain the desired appearance. Surgical procedures typically are more permanent.

Lip augmentation, like any other cosmetic treatment, has risks such as infection, bruising, edema, and inconsistent results. Choosing a qualified practitioner and discussing potential issues during your appointment are critical.
