Why is non-surgical cheek augmentation recommended?

Aging and other natural changes to the body can cause the appearance of flat, saggy cheeks and a sunken-in look over time. As a result, cheek augmentations are becoming an increasingly popular non-surgical procedure to restore youthful volume and improve the appearance of the cheek area. While some people have naturally high cheekbones, others can have the look of sculpted cheeks with non-surgical treatments that focus on restoring plumpness, volume, and definition.

What are my options for achieving cheek augmentation?

One option for achieving cheek augmentation is surgical cheek implants. Patients unhappy with the underlying structure of their cheeks and want a permanent treatment often opt for implants. Synthetic implants are inserted into the facial tissues and are held in place by conforming to the shape of the bone. Cheek implants provide volume by enhancing the appearance of the cheekbones’ projection. While the initial outcome of plastic surgery with facial implants can be seen almost immediately, results will be obscured by visible swelling. It may take several months for swelling to dissipate fully.

Facial fat transfer, or facial fat grafting, is another treatment process that provides a long-term solution to cheeks that are hollowed or have become flat with age. Fat grafting of the cheeks involves taking fat from an area of the body, processing that fat, and re-injecting it into the patient’s cheeks. Fat grafting is less long-lasting than permanent cheek implants but can still last for many years. On the other hand, fat grafting is more invasive than the use of injectable fillers.

A non-surgical alternative to cheek implants and fat grafting is the injection of dermal fillers. JUVÉDERM fillers are the most used in our office as they are quick and easy to execute, with little to no downtime. A cheek augmentation consisting of JUVEDERM VOLUMA XC filler can help to minimize a lack of facial volume and improve the natural structure of the cheeks. Other cheek fillers, such as Sculptra, are available at Essential Aesthetics to improve your appearance and achieve higher, fuller cheekbones. While dermal fillers are a more temporary option, they effectively provide cheek lift and volume for patients seeking non-surgical treatment.

How soon will I see the results after receiving dermal filler cheek injections?

The result of cheek augmentation is immediate and can last up to two years with JUVÉDERM VOLUMA. As the aging process continues, a patient’s facial appearance will change over time. Most patients need more than one treatment to achieve their ideal outcome. During your consultation appointment, Ellie Zarnegar, PA,DMSc, will conduct a full assessment of your facial anatomy to develop a plan that best meets your personal goals. The initial visit typically requires more than two or three syringes.

What should I expect following non-surgical cheek augmentation?

After receiving cheek augmentation, mild soreness, bruising, and swelling are expected in the cheek areas. These are common conditions that should resolve in a few days. We recommend patients apply ice immediately following the procedure and alternate between applying heat and ice for bruising during recovery. We evaluate our patients two weeks and six months after treatment at Essential Aesthetics to achieve full correction.
