Is a CoolSculpting Procedure Right for You?

It’s important to note that CoolSculpting treatment works best on adults who are in generally good shape but frustrated by smaller, stubborn deposits of unwanted fat. The CoolSculpting device uses various applicators to effectively treat different areas of the body. The areas CoolSculpting can be applied to include:

  • Inner and outer thighs
  • Abdomen
  • Bra bulge/back
  • Flanks and love handles
  • Beneath the chin
  • Above the knees
  • Beneath the buttocks — sometimes called a “banana roll”

The CoolSculpting procedure works by selectively freezing fat cells using a patented technology called Cryolipolysis®. Because fat cells freeze at a higher temperature than other tissues, CoolSculpting treatment doesn’t damage skin or muscle. Instead, targeted fat cells undergo a natural death called apoptosis. In the weeks following a CoolSculpting treatment, the treated fat cells die and are absorbed by the body, leaving behind slimmer contours.

Your CoolSculpting Experience

CoolSculpting at Essential Aesthetics is a relaxing, enjoyable procedure performed right here in our office. After a brief consultation with Ellie at our Danville office, she begins your treatment by applying cool gel pads to your skin. These pads help regulate the temperature of the treatment, ensuring that only your fat cells freeze. Ellie then places the CoolSculpting applicator on your treatment area. The device uses gentle suction to draw the fat between 2 cooling panels. Although you may feel some initial discomfort as the cold sets in, eventually the area will go numb. The exact length of your treatment time depends on the plan that you and Ellie developed together. You may be in our Danville office for as little as 35 minutes or as long as a few hours. But don’t worry — during this time, you can stream your favorite shows and movies on Netflix or Amazon Prime, read, or just relax. Our staff provides you with light, healthy refreshments.

You may choose to pair your CoolSculpting treatment with dermal fillers or BOTOX® Cosmetic. Ellie will let you know how long you can expect your treatment to last during your complimentary consultation.

After Your Procedure

Immediately after the CoolSculpting procedure, your skin will feel stiff, but this resolves within 10 to 15 minutes. You can return to your normal activities right away but should expect some lingering redness and soreness, similar to what you experience the day after a tough workout at the gym.

Results take several weeks to fully develop, and you should see your preliminary outcome about 3 weeks after CoolSculpting. One session can eliminate up to 25% of the fat in each area we treat. While some patients are satisfied with their results after a single treatment, others opt for a series of treatments for a more significant outcome. We will work with you to create a treatment plan that meets your goals.

By sticking to healthy exercise and eating habits, you can enjoy the results of your CoolSculpting treatment for many years.

Your CoolSculpting Options

  • DualSculpting®: Because we have more than one CoolSculpting machine in our office, we’re able to implement DualSculpting, a time-saving option for patients who want to treat multiple areas at once. During a DualSculpting treatment, Ellie applies 2 CoolSculpting devices to the parts of your body that you’d like to treat — at the same time. This allows her to address both arms, both thighs, or another combination of 2 areas in the time it would normally take to undergo a single treatment.
  • CoolAdvantage Plus: Twice the size of a standard CoolSculpting applicator, CoolAdvantage Plus treats a larger area of fat for more significant results.
  • CoolAdvantage Petite: Designed specifically to reduce fat in the upper arms, CoolAdvantage Petite offers an effective solution for this very common trouble spot.
  • CoolMini: The smallest CoolSculpting applicator sits snugly against the area beneath the chin, freezing the fat that causes a double chin and improving your profile without the use of surgery or needles.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who are the best candidates for CoolSculpting?

The best candidates are men and women who are at or near their ideal weights but are still bothered by small, localized pockets of fat that are resistant to diet and exercise. During your consultation, we will evaluate your areas of concern and help you decide whether CoolSculpting is a good match for you.

How was the CoolSculpting treatment developed?

CoolSculpting uses a unique cooling process called Cryolipolysis®. This idea was originally developed by 2 Harvard scientists after they noticed that some children’s cheeks dimpled after eating popsicles. Over the course of several years, they refined the process to effectively freeze and destroy body fat cells without hurting the surrounding tissue. CoolSculpting became FDA-cleared for fat reduction in 2010.

Is CoolSculpting safe?

Extensive research on CoolSculpting reveals that the procedure has an excellent safety record. Testing has not produced any reports of adverse systematic effects from the CoolSculpting treatment. Because the treated fat cells are gradually eliminated from the body, the liver and other vital organs are not impacted in any negative way.

What does a treatment really feel like?

Most of our patients describe the treatment as being surprisingly comfortable. Initially, there is a feeling of intense cold and sometimes a prickly sensation. The skin will quickly become numb, which diminishes any discomfort during the remainder of the treatment. Afterward, you might experience some soreness, but most people find the recovery very tolerable.

Does CoolSculpting help with cellulite?

CoolSculpting is meant to treat localized fat deposits, not necessarily cellulite. Although most people think of cellulite as a fat-related concern, it is a bit more complicated than that. Cellulite is caused by bands of fibrous tissue that pull on the skin from below the surface, which forms dimples and divots. Excess fat can exaggerate the appearance of cellulite. Thus, CoolSculpting may help reduce the look of cellulite, but it’s unlikely to eliminate it.

How many pounds can I lose using CoolSculpting?

Although CoolSculpting does help patients get rid of stubborn fat, most don’t see a big difference on the scale. As we mentioned before, good candidates are already close to their ideal weight and lead healthy lifestyles. CoolSculpting is meant to sculpt and smoothen areas that have proven too stubborn to tone with diet and exercise alone. We encourage our patients to think of results in terms of inches, not pounds.
